More of The Morne

They say life can only be understood backwards. Whereas this truth can also be applied in a certain place’s identity—that what it is now, its people, its culture, and its looks are all remnants of the past. And to have a clearer grasp of anywhere, one must go beyond what can only be seen at the present—those that took place long time ago.

Sounds nostalgic? Well, it’s just a catch to get you ready for our featured location among the plenty St. Lucia attractions. Lying on the Southern side of Castries, St. Lucia’s capital, Morne Fortune or ‘The Morne’ is a hill and a residential area as well. It rises more than 800 feet above La Toc which is the Southern part of Castries. Since it is a hill, the views around it are all impressive—displaying St. Lucia’s eye-catching locations including the Castries Harbor. Also, situated at the Morne is the Government House, the residential home of the Governor General that dates back in history. 



The Accounts of the Past

Its name, Morne Fortune means ‘hill of good luck’ in its direct translation. However, the name seemed not to define the real essence of the place for it has stood as a battleground for several bloody fights between the French and English forces way back in the 18th and 19th centuries. The most popular battle then took place on the 24th of May, 1796 wherein the British forces captured the Morne from the French after an uphill struggle. In fact, a memorial monument was built for the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers that is still standing at this very moment. Several buildings that are constructed at the Mourne either owned by France or Britain are destroyed to ruins, but there are still historical remains that are being preserved in the area for visitors who would want a glimpse on St. Lucia’s history. These remains that stay standing are those that are built in the late 19th century. 

Relics for the Present

In the present time, Morne Fortune serves as the mirror of St. Lucia in the times elapsed. It is now surrounded with plenty of old fortifications, cannons, and gun emplacements left by the troupes that once inhabited the area. Be Acquainted with St. Lucia's Pigeon Island

Pigeon Island, or otherwise known as Pigeon Island National Park holds a history that dates back to the 16th century. Originally, as the name connotes, this was an island located in the 
northern coast of St. Lucia, at Gros Islet. But in the year 1972, a sandy walkway was constructed that connected this island to the nearby Gros Islet. However, Pigeon Island is still considered as
an island, as to what it is before.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

As what was mentioned, Pigeon Island played a considerably significant role in the antiquity of St. Lucia starting in the times of exploration, 16th century. Over the years, the name of the first French inhabitant of St. Lucia, Francois Le Clerc or most commonly known by his epithet, Jambe de Bois remained as the primary descriptor of the island. He was an unpopular trailblazer of a group of
pirates which has a wooden leg (english translation of Jambe de Bois). He utilized the island as a means of attacking the passing ships of the Spaniards. Whereas in the 18th century, the popular admiral of Britain reinforced the area to be used as a base in monitoring French ships in Martinique. The British even built a fort in the said island which is named Fort Rodney which became a popular historical ruin in the Pigeon Island. In teh late 18th century, Admiral Rodney bid goodbye to the island leaving it with amazing ports that are still standing as of today.

At present, the island is considered as a national park upon its declaration way back in 1992, and is under the management of St. Lucia National Trust. The park remains an interesting place to visit among the list of St. Lucia attractions not just because of its historical sorts, but also because of different prolific activities and sights that are worthy of anyone's time.

What to look out for at Pigeon Island

Not only do the Pitons and the Pigeon Island describes this island in whole, but there's also one remaining place that deserves to  be recognized--the Marigot Bay. In fact, it was once described to be the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean by an American writer and lengthens our list of the St. Lucia attractions.


Marigot Bay is situated at the west coast of St. Lucia and is nearby its capital, Castries. It is composed of breath-taking forested hills that are really picture-perfect. Besides, the landscape itself is a challenging twist for adventurers given that the north side of the island can be accessed only by boat, while the remaining sides are all steep hills. If one is looking for a perfect island getaway, then he must head over to Marigot Bay.

Another interesting thing to know about this one featured here is that it played a significant part in the world history. Bird Watching: The St. Lucia Peewee

If you are planning St. Lucia excursions at the rainforest, better not miss out on going St. Lucia bird watching. St. Lucia rainforest is home to numerous number of bird species that will leave you in awe. There are around 170 known bird species found nesting and flying on St. Lucia’s teeming rainforest. Some of these are only seen in the island and not in anywhere part of the world.

Among these bird species is the St. Lucia Peewee.


Scientific name: Contopus oberi
Local Names: Gobe-Mouche, or Pin Kaka

Characteristics

A peewee is generally known as Gobe-Mouche or Pin Kaka. I have dull olive broen upperparts and ruddy tan under parts. The mature Pewee can grow at about 15 cm long. Its common natural surroundings are subtropical or tropical dry backwoods, subtropical or tropical clammy woods, and subtropical or tropical soggy rainforests. Pewee is a sort of tentative fledgling kind of bird that is typically seen in openings in the rainforest where they sally for creepy crawlies. You can hear its calling sound as a climbing pree-e-e and a shrill peet-peet-peet.

Habitat

The pewee home is in a shape of a cup formed by making leaves and greenery put on a tree's limb. The female pewee produces offspring by laying two dull cream-colored eggs, vigorously spotted with brown. Its ordinary reproducing season is May and June. St Lucia Pewee is entirely endemic on the grounds that they were viewed as races of Lesser Antillean Pewee.
